  • A classroom that teaches all level clay classes: handbuilding, wheel throwing and jewelry design

  • A spot to practice Figure Drawing weekly

  • An event space that hosts private parties and community art shows

  • An inclusive art space that brings the creative community of Boise together

Handbuilding

  • Handbuilding is arguably the first thing students should learn when beginning their journey with clay. It is fundamental to ceramic education. Pinch, slab, and coil are handbuilding techniques used to make pottery or sculptures with minimal tools or no tools at all. Projects can be simple or complex depending on skill level.

Handbuilding helps students learn the material by slowing the process down. Students experience the drying cycle, learn structural integrity and form, without having to spend countless hours learning how to center clay as one does when learning how to throw on the wheel.

Knowing how to handbuild opens up limitless possibilities with clay, but more than that, it is a fun, intuitive, meditative and healing process.

  • In all of our handbuilding classes students receive personalized instruction on how to make an object of their desire. Most students make functional or sculptural vessels (mugs, bowls, planters etc.) In class students will complete an object and choose a glaze. We glaze all of our student work.

Although no finished work is gaurenteed most students successfully complete a project. Projects are ready for pick up within 2-4 weeks.

All materials and firings are included.

  • We host weekly group classes that individuals can join. We also offer private classes to groups and individuals.

Group Parties are a great way to celebrate an occasion, gather friends and family, or creatively bond with co-workers. We have hosted birthday parties, bachelor/bachelorette parties, reunions, team-building parties and more.

Wheel Throwing

  • Wheel throwing is the process of forming pottery/shapes on the potter’s wheel. To become proficient with throwing takes endless hours of practice, patience and dedication.

To learn how to make objects on the wheel, one must first learn how to center the clay. Once the clay is centered it can be opened up and pulled into different forms such as bowls, cups, planters, vases etc.

  • In our wheel throwing classes students receive personalized, step by step instruction on centering and creating various forms. Our classes are 2 hours long to allow students time to learn the steps and possibly make a piece of pottery. If a student completes a piece they have the option to book a Trimming Lesson (trimming is a finishing process) or allow us to trim for them. Trimming must take place within one week of throwing. Finished work is ready for pick up within 2-4 weeks.

  • Our slogan is Try Clay, You Might Like it! Although we’d love to offer longer course options, or open studio, we have limited space. Our goal is to help you fall in love with clay, if we succeed and you want to commit to more regular wheel classes we can recommend a few local options for you.

Jewelry Design

  • Clay Collective is also a production studio for Clay by Shay Jewelry. Clay by Shay Jewelry is lightweight, adventure-proof, and has a lifetime guarantee. Each piece is handmade and all the metal findings are sterling silver or 14k gold.

  • Bring a group of friends to Clay Collective to design custom jewelry. You design, we assemble. At the event your party will have access to the entire selection of Clay by Shay charms and your choice of 14k gold or sterling silver findings. Necklace and bracelet options are also available. Parties can be held at Clay Collective or at a location of your choice.

One piece of jewelry per participant, additional pieces can be designed and purchased at the event

Private groups of 5 or more are invited to host a party. BYOB is welcome.

  • We have a flexible schedule for Jewelry Design Workshops and are often able to accommodate your schedule. If you do not see available times online that work for you please give us a call.
