Welcome to Clay Collective
PRO TIPS
Get the most out of your class:
Sketchbooks are cool!
No ideas are too far out! You don’t have to know how to draw to scribble in a sketchbook. Draw weird shapes and try to recreate them on the wheel or at the table.
Do clay research and write what you learn in your sketchbook. Clay is a physical medium- use a pencil and a piece of paper to match the vibe!
Practice- not perfection
The more you experiment the more you will learn from the unexpected and joyful surprises of ceramics. Don’t get too attached! Letting go is a big part of working with clay. You will learn this quick.
Material knowledge takes time.
Every clay body, every kiln firing, every glaze recipe has its own rules. Write everything down. You won’t regret meticulous note taking, especially when it comes to glaze combinations.
We allow students to bring their own clay and glaze to experiment with as long as it is mid-range, that means cone 5 or 6!
OPEN STUDIO IS THE WAY
The more miles you put on the wheel the better. The slower you work a hand building project the more control you have over the form. Time flies in the pottery studio.
If you want to rapidly grow, make Open Studio a part of your weekly routine!
